Labour will follow Joe Biden’s lead by helping working mothers get jobs in cutting edge sectors, Rachel Reeves vowed last night.

The Shadow Chancellor will hold talks with the U.S. President’s team in Washington DC today.

She has pledged to learn from the White House’s drive to encourage more women to get high paid jobs in science and technology.

The frontbencher also will discuss how the Biden administration is working with trade unions and employers to ensure that efforts to tackle climate change also lead to better jobs in former industrial heartlands.

Contracts for an enormous wind turbine project across the East Coast contain commitments to good standards in pay, health and safety, and training.

Ms Reeves said that she will also look at how to support women to join growing industries.

Companies benefiting from U.S. government funding to expand the semiconductor industry are required to set out what their affordable childcare policy will be for parents they employ.

Speaking ahead of a speech in Washington DC today, Ms Reeves told the Mirror: "We can see from President Biden's approach that with the right approach and values, tackling the climate crisis can also mean creating good new jobs including in former industrial areas.

“Labour is determined to put money back in the pockets of working people, rebuild local communities and create more and better jobs and opportunities for the future.”

She added: “This is the economic opportunity of the 21st century. It is the opportunity not just to transform our energy system but to transform the economy itself, creating good jobs across Britain.

“This is our chance - but it can easily slip from our grasp. I know that our economy must be powered by the contribution of millions of working people. And that’s why good pay, decent conditions and a voice at work are important.”

As having conversations with key architects of President Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act, Ms Reeves will meet with U.S. trade union leaders.
