Ricky Gervais makes history as he earns record-breaking sum for stand-up gig
Ricky Gervais has made history after earning an incredible £1.41million ($1.75million) for a single stand-up performance.
The 61-year-old comedian joked that he "should retire now" after taking to the stage in Los Angeles' Hollywood Bowl on May 6 as part of his Armageddon tour.
The packed-out show meant Ricky set a record, as it was the world's highest-grossing single gig by a British stand-up comedian.
After hearing the news, he took to Twitter to thank his fans for their support, writing: "A career highlight. I should retire now. Thanks to everyone who bought a ticket."
Ricky's fans quickly congratulated the star on his achievement, with one person writing: "You deserve it top man."

A third wrote: "Amazing achievement you must be so proud," while someone else tweeted: "You have done well Ricky. You can take a break, but please don’t ever retire. At least, not yet. We need you."
The Office star previously shared several tweets about his Hollywood Bowl show, which he described as "one of the most surreal nights of my life".

Ricky added: "Wish I'd filmed it now... if only to remind myself it actually happened. Mental."
Comedian Ricky also shared a snap of the night on Instagram, writing: "That time I played a packed out Hollywood F**king Bowl."
The comedian is set to continue his Armageddon tour throughout the year and will travel across the US, UK and Europe.
