The family of a student feared to have been murdered by Levi Bellfield have spoken of their fury after claiming the serial killer marked the spot where he buried her body on a map.

Elizabeth Chau's brother and sister allege detectives have said that the area marked is "too vast" to start digging.

Elizabeth's furious loved ones say detectives are refusing to immediately dig where Bellfield claimed to have dumped her body because the area is "too vast".

Bellfield - jailed for killing schoolgirl Milly Dowler - offered to lead detectives to the remains of Elizabeth, 19, after he confessed to snatching her from the street near her home in Ealing, west London, in 1999.

Her family say they have lost trust and confidence in the police after a tense two-hour meeting with homicide detectives yesterday.

They say police claimed the area Bellfield - who was interviewed under caution in HMP Frankland last week - identified was too “vast” to dig straight away, according to three people present at the meeting.

But Bellfield’s solicitor and Elizabeth’s brother and sister have refused to accept their conclusion.

Elizabeth's brother, Minh-Vu, told the Guardian: "We have lost trust and confidence in the police, because they are acting too slowly.

"They are being very vague, they have not done enough. They have enough to go to the site and to try and verify whether Elizabeth is there or not.”

Elizabeth’s sister Bic-Hang Chau said the family did not believe the area identified by Bellfield was “too vast”.She said: “We don’t believe that is true. They are not doing anything because Elizabeth is not a priority.”

Bellfield signed a confession which is said to include chilling details of Elizabeth's final moments and offered to show detectives the exact location where he buried her.

At the time of Elizabeth's disappearance he would have been 31 and working as a nightclub bouncer. He earned the moniker the "Bus Stop Killer" because he stalked girls and young women who passed, approaching them in his van.

He was living in west London, not far from Elizabeth's last known sighting.

Police are understood to be consulting or due to consult with forensic experts and specialists in digging historic sites and told

Elizabeth's family any excavation could take months. They have not committed to digging the site and their investigation continues.

Bic-Hang said: “The meeting with police investigators was hard and disappointing and the pace of the investigation remains frustratingly slow and painful. We are not confident that finding Elizabeth’s remains is being prioritised.”

Theresa Clark, Bellfield’s solicitor, was present when he made his alleged confession to detectives. Detectives showed a printout of a Google map to Bellfield, who marked with a ballpoint pen a specific area, Clark said.

She had physical sight of the spot on the map that her client identified to police. Clark said: “I could see the area on the map. It circled it and put a cross within that circle with a Biro. He said he might be 20ft out.

“It is an area he knew well. It was quite specific. It did not look vast.”Bellfield is serving a whole-life term for the murders of Marsha McDonnell, Amelie Delagrange and schoolgirl Milly.

Milly was kidnapped and murdered in March 2002 aged 13. She was walking home when she was abducted in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey. Her body was found six months later.

Marsha was beaten to death close to her home in Hampton, Richmond, in February 2003, before Bellfield struck again in August 2004, killing 22-year-old French student Amelie on Twickenham Green, in south west London.

A spokesperson from the Metropolitan Police said: "We can confirm we remain in contact with Elizabeth Chau’s family.

"At this time, we will not be providing an ongoing commentary."
