Former Liverpool striker Luis Suarez shared a message of support for his old team as they took on Everton in Monday's Merseyside derby.

Suarez spent three-and-a-half years at Anfield, scoring 82 goals in just 133 appearances for the Reds. He was part of the League Cup winning side in 2012 and finished as the Premier League's top scorer in the 2013-14 season as Brendan Rodgers' side finished second.

The Uruguay international left Liverpool for Barcelona after that campaign, winning the Champions League in his first season at Camp Nou. He has made a number of moves since, the most recent of which took him to Gremio in Brazil, but he still appears to have a soft spot for his only Premier League side.

'Come on Liverpool FC!" Suarez wrote on an Instagram story, adding the letters 'YNWA'. The caption was shared with a photo of his TV screen, demonstrating his determination to watch the Reds in action.

With their former frontman watching on., Liverpool finally ended their wait for a first Premier League victory of 2023. Mohamed Salah broke the deadlock against Sean Dyche's Everton, while Cody Gakpo scored his first goal for his new club to make the points safe.

The result lifted Jurgen Klopp's team above Chelsea and into ninth, while leaving their opponents in the bottom three. Liverpool remain nine points adrift of the top four, though they take on fourth-placed Newcastle United in their next league game.

The game was a significant one for Gakpo, who had struggled to hit top form since his January move from PSV Eindhoven. His goal wasn't the toughest he will score - a tap-in at the far post after Trent Alexander-Arnold played in a low cross from the right - but it was a welcome sight for a player looking to kick-start his Anfield career.

“I think for every attacking player it’s one point you have to do – score goals – and you have to try to do your best to help the team where you can,” Gakpo told Sky Sports after the game. Liverpool welcomed Roberto Firmino and Diogo Jota back from injury for the derby, and both will be pushing for minutes from the start. After the trip to Newcastle, Klopp's team will be back in Champions League action with the first leg of their last-16 clash with Real Madrid.

“Then it’s up to the coach for the choices he makes for the starting 11," the Dutch international continued. "I think it’s good that they come back, now we have more options, more quality, and we’re more likely to win games. That’s most important at this point.”
