Argentina fans clash in mass brawl ahead of World Cup semi-final against England
A mass brawl has erupted between Argentina supporters ahead of tonight’s semi-final clash in the World Cup against England.
Police were forced to intervene in Atlanta after footage shared on social media showed fans throwing glass bottles and tables at each other.
At least one man was handcuffed and led away by police following the clash.
The fighting reportedly involved rival supporters of Argentinian football clubs San Lorenzo and Huracán.
The disorder broke out during what was believed to be a ‘flag-waving rally’.
It comes after police announced that security measures had been ramped up ahead of Argentina’s blockbuster match against England on Wednesday night.
The match has been labelled one of the tournament’s highest-risk fixtures because of the fierce rivalry between the two nations.
Roughly 100,000 supporters are expected to be in Atlanta on Wednesday night, despite the Mercedes-Benz Stadium holding a capacity of only 68,000 fans.
Argentina supporters are expected to outnumber England fans in the US, with reports suggesting that two-thirds of those travelling to the city could be cheering on the reigning world champions.
From Diego Maradona’s infamous ‘Hand of God’ goal to the 1982 Falklands War, the rivalry between these two countries remains one of the largest in the world of football.
Both Argentina’s manager, Lionel Scaloni, and England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford have insisted that politics and football should be kept separate.
The Everton player said that the semi-final is ‘just a game of football’ which ‘will do its talking’.
Prior to the clash, Atlanta had remained relatively peaceful throughout the World Cup.
Speaking ahead of the semi-final, the Atlanta Police Department said it had increased its security presence across the city.
In a statement, the force said: ‘As Atlanta prepares to host an upcoming FIFA World Cup semi-final match and welcomes increased numbers of residents and visitors, the Atlanta Police Department has enhanced its citywide public safety and security posture.
‘Additional personnel and resources are already deployed and will continue to be strategically assigned in and around the event venues, entertainment districts and other high-traffic areas to help ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone.’
