Two children were inside the house where a 'bubbly and outgoing' mum and her partner were found dead, relatives claim.

The bodies of Katie Higton, 27, and Steven Harnett, 25, were discovered in Huddersfield, west Yorkshire, with detectives treating their deaths as suspicious.

Police are continuing to hold a 34-year-old man, who has been arrested on suspicion of their murder.

Mr Harnett had his house trashed days before the "frenzied attack" as neighbours told the Mirror they heard shouting outside the flat last Friday and saw it all "kicking off".

Family members of the woman have paid tribute to "the best mum," reports YorkshireLive.

The former brother and sister in law of Ms Higton said the family was “absolutely devastated” as they placed flowers at the scene.

West Yorkshire Police said officers were called to an address at 9.53am on Monday after paramedics found two people with multiple injuries. They were confirmed to have died at the scene.

Today a police officer stands guard outside the semi-detached house with rubbish strewn across the property and windows smashed in.

Grieving family members attended at the scene to lay flowers for mother-of-four Ms Higton.

Her former brother-in-law, who asked not to be named, said his brother had been in a relationship with Ms Higton for seven years and was the father of her two oldest children, daughters aged nine and 10.

He told the PA news agency the children "were in the property when the incident took place". He described Ms Higton as “bubbly, outgoing, fun” and “a great mum”.

The Mirror contacted West Yorkshire Police for further comment.

Several active inquiries by the West Yorkshire Police’s homicide and major enquiry team remain ongoing.

The street was still cordoned off on Tuesday morning, with five police cars still at the scene.

A resident from the street behind Harpe Inge said: "I knew it was serious, with the air ambulance and the forensics. They were out all day." A card left with flowers at the scene said: "RIP my darling. We love you. No more suffering."

Another said: “I am so sorry for how things have ended.” Scott I’Anson, who lives on Harpe Inge, said he did not know the woman who lived in the house but had seen her and her children.

"They kept to themselves but a lot of people liked them," he said. "It’s quite a big family street. I knew she had a partner but I never met him."

Formal post mortems are yet to be conducted, however both victims had received multiple injuries believed to have been inflicted by a bladed weapon, police have revealed.

A spokesperson for the force said specially trained officers have been supporting their families today and would ask their privacy is respected at what is clearly a dreadful time.

Police activity remains ongoing at nearby locations to Harpe Inge as part of enquires connected to the murder and local neighbourhood officers continue to conduct reassurance patrols.

Anyone who can assist the investigation is asked to contact the Homicide and Major Enquiry Team on 101 referencing police log 408 of 15 May. Information can also be given online at www.westyorkshire.police.uk/101livechat
