The new Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh have been praised for their 'touching' gesture during the Coronation celebrations.

Prince Edward was given the new title along with his wife Sophie Wessex on his birthday back in March - and he appeared to continue the legacy of former holder Prince Philip with a thoughtful act last weekend.

In one of the official Coronation photos, the royal couple could be seen lending some support to Princess Alexandra, 86, to help her stand.

Often described as an 'unsung hero' of the Royal Family, Alexandra, The Honourable Lady Ogilvy, is cousin of the late Queen Elizabeth II through their uncle King George VI and provided vital support to her as Head of State, accompanying her to many ceremonial occasions.

She also holds positions as president or patron of over 100 organisations, including Guide Dogs for the Blind Association, Cancer Research UK and the London Philharmonic Choir.

Prince Edward and Sophie's kindness towards her for the photograph on Saturday did not go unnoticed, as a number of eagle-eyed royal fans took to social media to point out their good deed.

One user praised “the care that Sophie and Edward are taking over Princess Alexandra”, while another added: “I just adore Sophie. She is just pure class, kindness, and elegance.”

Another said: “What a splendid photo. I love zooming in to see all the detail on all the outfits. What a lot of hard work!"

The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh have attended a number of high-profile events in a royal capacity since being given their new titles by King Charles III earlier this year.

This included last weekend's Coronation service at Westminster Abbey, where Edward could be seen arriving in a ceremonial gown, while Sophie wore a cream dress underneath her Royal Victoria Order Mantle and matching floral headpiece.

On the Sunday, they were cheered by gathered crowds in Cranleigh, Surrey as they arrived at the village's Coronation Big Lunch.

While at the street party, they were snapped tucking in to a taste of coronation chicken pie, which had been prepared by locals in their brand new air fryers.

One delighted resident told the BBC: “We're known for our street parties here on Fry Crescent, but we usually barbeque or bake the food we serve, so creating a menu made up entirely of food rustled up in our new Tefal air fryers has been a challenge which we've all relished.”

Prince Edward and Sophie then headed to Cranleigh Village Hall to attend a Coronation Craft Market before dropping by a fun fair on the High Street.
