The UK's closest neighbour won't be featuring in this year's Eurovision Song Contest finals after getting the boot.

Ireland failed to qualify for the grand finale having missed out on a place during the semi-finals.

Dublin band Wild Youth represented the country and was one of the five acts eliminated during the first live semi-final of the week at the M&S Bank Arena in Liverpool.

The group were competing against 14 other acts for a spot in Saturday night's show.

The 10 countries who made it through to the grand final were Croatia, Moldova, Switzerland, Finland, Czechia, Israel, Portugal, Sweden, Serbia and Norway.

Ireland has taken part in Eurovision more than 50 times and has a record seven wins, but has failed to qualify for the final since Ryan O’Shaughnessy entered with his song Together in 2018.

Frontman Conor O’Donohoe wore a green shamrock necklace and a sparkling gold jumpsuit as the band took to the stage.

But pyrotechnics and shimmering gold lighting were not enough to win over the voting public.

The UK were unable to vote on Tuesday night's show.

Eurovision presenters Alesha Dixon, Julia Sanina and Hannah Waddingham stunned as they took to the stage at Liverpool's M&S Bank Arena to kick off the live contest.

Alesha surprised viewers during the show as she broke out into a rap about Eurovision.

The presenter, 44, was chatting to contestants who had already performed their songs when she showed off her own talents.

"Listen, Liverpool, let me hit you with the facts and I'll talk you through some really iconic acts," she said in her rap.

"Greta Thunburg's mum in 2009, San Marino's Valentina performed four times, in the city of Kyiv, Sobral swept the board with the most points in history a contestant ever scored. Dana and Conchita, yeah, they really changed the game.

"Lordi and Maneskin, they put rock in the frame. As our souls reunite are you ready for a show? We're united by music, Eurovision let's go!"

The Britain's Got Talent judge divided fans as some praised her unexpected performance whilst others branded it "not needed".

This year, the Eurovision Song Contest is being held in Liverpool despite Ukraine winning the competition in 2022, as they have been unable to host due to the war.
