Kansas City Chiefs superstar Patrick Mahomes claimed only his golf game would be affected by his ankle injury after winning Super Bowl LVII on Sunday night.

On Sunday night in Arizona, Reid’s Chiefs secured a dramatic 38-35 win over the Philadelphia Eagles in a game which will go down as an all-time classic. Kansas City quarterback Mahomes threw for 182 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Chiefs to a sensational win, which was secured by kicker Harrison Butker with just eight seconds remaining.

Mahomes admirably soldiered through his high ankle sprain to lead the Chiefs to victory, as he rushed for 44 yards on six attempts including a crucial 26-yard on the game-winning fourth quarter drive. The 24-year-old was diagnosed with a Grade 2 sprain against the Jacksonville Jaguars in the Divisional Round of the NFL playoffs.

On Monday morning, a weary Mahomes - who had clearly been celebrating his second Super Bowl win - started his MVP press conference by thanking his teammates for their effort and achievement. He then said he will rest his ankle over the offseason in order to take part in the Chiefs’ offseason training, but the two-time MVP admitted he will steer clear of the golf course for now.

“I’ll for sure be ready for OTAs and everything like that,” Mahomes told reporters. “Obviously, we’ll continue to rehab, continue the treatment that we were doing, and just give it some rest. I think the best thing for it is going to be rest. Just try to make sure when we get to OTAs, I’m ready to go. One thing that might take a hit is my golf game. So I’ll take a few weeks off of that.”

In the second quarter, Mahomes rushed for nine yards where he was tackled by T.J. Edwards. It would have been an innocent moment, but the Chiefs star was taken down by his right ankle, which he sprained three weeks ago. Mahomes writhed in pain and was slow to his feet while backup Chad Henne began warming up only for the Super Bowl MVP to inspire his team with a courageous performance.

Mahomes addressed the incident and claimed he was in pain following Edwards’ ankle - but he knew he was going to simply tape it up and continue as it was the Super Bowl. He added: “The only time that it had the real hurt in the ankle was when I got tackled, it kind of rolled to the outside a little bit.

“Once you have that high ankle sprain, when any little tweak like that happens, that just magnifies it. Coming into the game, I felt way better than I did the Cincinnati game. Obviously, that happened there, and luckily we were able to get in at halftime, get some new tape on there and some movement to try to get some mobility back.

“I think we talked about it with my offensive line. They protected me enough where I was able to sit there and make the throws. It was something I was going to play through, but I’m glad that I get a little bit of rest on it now.”
