Ed Sheeran has revealed he never actually received an invitation to perform at the Coronation Concert this evening.

The British singer, who recently won a copyright trial in New York, says he "wasn't asked" but is "excited to tune in" to the bash taking place at Windsor Castle later this evening.

Speaking earlier this month, Ed explained how he wanted to "set the record straight" regarding reports he had turned down the chance to belt out a tune for the new King and Queen - revealing there was actually no offer from Buckingham Palace for him to reject.

Ed, alongside Alanis Morissette, will instead be spending his Sunday evening as a guest judge on American Idol, as full-time judges Katy Perry and Lionel Richie perform for the newly crowned head of state in London.

"Lots of people are saying to me how it's random [Katy Perry and Lionel Richie] are going to sing at the King's Coronation... I want to clear something up actually," Ed began when chatting on SiriusXM.

"No one ever asked me [to perform]," the Shape of You singer added to the sound of gasps from the radio show's hosts.

"I assume if they went online and went 'what's Ed doing on May 6' they would go 'oh he's playing in Dallas' so I think that's what's happened."

"I never ever turned it down. I wasn't asked but yeah, I am excited to tune into that. Historic, isn't it?"

Ed may not have snubbed the Royal Family but plenty of other British singers reportedly have.

While Americans Lionel and Katy are set to join the likes of Paloma Faith, Olly Murs and Take That performing at Windsor Castle this evening, many big British names from the world of music are said to have turned down the chance to join them.

Honourary Brit Kylie Minogue was reportedly asked to perform but turned down the chance to wow the crowd with her hit songs, due to the huge republican sentiment in her home country of Australia.

Kylie, 54, was advised that the gig would not go down well with those back home, with the idea of constitutional reform ramping up in the months following Queen Elizabeth II's death in September.

British superstars including Elton John, the Spice Girls, Adele, Harry Styles, Robbie Williams and Ed Sheeran are all said to have also declined the offer from Buckingham Palace.

Meanwhile, Melanie C, Mel B, Geri Halliwell and Emma Bunton had been tipped to reunite for the Coronation, less than a year after they were forced to pull out of the Queen's Platinum Jubilee, according to the Daily Star.

But the 90s legends have decided against the show despite talk of another world tour - without Victoria Beckham.
