A man suffered life-changing facial injuries after he was violently mauled by a dog that has since vanished along with its owner.

The 24-year-old man was rushed to hospital following the shocking dog attack outside a Ladbrokes in Clermiston, Edinburgh, around 8.30pm on Thursday May 4.

His condition is currently unknown but police confirmed he suffered severe facial injuries and was taken to the Royal Infirmary in Edinburgh for treatment.

Officers are now trying to hunt down the dog responsible, and its owner, after they both disappeared following the attack.

Detective Constable Stephen Nelson, of CID, said: "The injured man suffered life-changing facial injuries due to this dog attack.

"We are keen to speak to anyone who knows of a large dog in the area. We would also be eager to hear from motorists travelling in the area who have a dashcam.

"Please check the footage as it may have captured something which could prove vital to our ongoing inquiries.

"Any small piece of information could assist our inquiries, so please pass it on. Anyone with information is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101, quoting 3727 of 4 May, 2023."

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 8.30pm on Thursday, 4 May, 2023, we received a report that a 24-year- old man had been bitten by a dog in Duart Crescent, Edinburgh.

"He was taken to The Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh for treatment. Enquiries are ongoing.”

This comes after a similar attack in Devon saw the dog and owners also flee after a seven-year-old boy was mauled in a pub garden.

The youngster was bitten on the head by the large dog as he played in the outside area of the Crows Nest Inn in Swanage, Dorset.
