Prince Harry previously gave a blunt six-word response when asked why he and wife Meghan Markle have not given up their royal titles.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were given their titles on their wedding day in 2018 by the late Queen but the pair have since stepped back from royal duties and now live in California with their two children Archie, three, and Lilibet, one.

Harry, who next week will return to the UK for his father's Coronation, has had a strained relationship with members of the royal family in recent years, most particular his father, King Charles, and brother, Prince William.

The prince spoke about these issues in his book, Spare, which was released in January earlier this year. While promoting the book in a televised interview with CBS's 60 minutes, US broadcaster Anderson Cooper asked Prince Harry why he and wife Meghan had kept their royal titles and not given them up when they stood down from their roles in January 2020.

During the interview Mr Cooper asked: "Why not renounce your titles as Duke and Duchess?"

Harry replied: "And what difference would that make?"

Mr Cooper added: "One of the criticisms that you've received is that okay, fine, you wanna move to California, you wanna step back from the institutional role.

"Why be so public? Why reveal conversations you've had with your father or with your brother? You say you tried to do this privately."

Harry added: "And every single time I've tried to do it privately there have been briefings and leakings and planting of stories against me and my wife.

"You know, the family motto is 'never complain, never explain'. But it's just a motto. And it doesn't really hold."

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex even claimed they told King Charles they would give up their royal titles if it meant they could leave the UK.

Speaking in their controversial Netflix docuseries Harry & Meghan, the couple detail their decision to quit the royal family, saying they previously tried to move to New Zealand in 2018 and then to South Africa before shocking the world with an Instagram statement revealing they were moving to Canada.

In the fifth episode of their six-part series, Harry explains: "My father said 'Can you put it in writing?' I said I would rather not because what had happened last time. He said he couldn't do anything unless it was put in writing. I put it in emails."

He goes on to say he sent repeated messages on January 1,2 and 3 detailing their thoughts.

Prince Harry adds: "In one of those I said that if it didn't work out we would be willing to relinquish our Sussex titles if need be. That was the plan.

"We thought it would be good to give ourselves some breathing space, but we were also really passionate about continuing our work throughout the Commonwealth supporting the Queen."
