A woman who fell asleep on a train to Edinburgh woke up to find a man sitting next to her – naked.

The passenger used the long train journey to catch up on some sleep but was joined by an unwelcome companion who decided to strip enroute.

Police are investigating the incident which took place on a service between Polmont and Edinburgh Waverley on April 20.

The man later put on jogging bottoms and a black T-shirt before fleeing the train in Edinburgh, wearing black walking boots.

Detectives are appealing for witnesses and have obtained CCTV footage of the incident.

The suspect is described as a white male, aged between 65 and 70, with short grey hair and a stubbly beard.

He is said to be around 5ft 6inches tall and of a medium or slim build.

The British Transport Police confirmed the bizarre incident which began to unfold at around 7.20am last Thursday.

A spokesperson said: "Detectives are appealing for witnesses following a on a train between Polmont and Edinburgh Waverley.

"On 20 April at 7.21am a woman was on the train when she fell asleep. When she woke up a man was sitting next to her naked."

It comes after reports that one in three women had concerns for their safety when travelling on public transport, according to Transport Scotland.

The findings put forward ten recommendations including how to support and protect passengers as well as a review of staff training on their own safety

Other suggestions include the development of credible and accessible information and guidance on reporting incidents.

Scottish Transport Minister Jenny Gilruth said: "This is simply not acceptable in 21st-century Scotland."
