A twisted mum has been jailed for attempted murder after she threw her 10-month-old baby across a room.

The actions of Samantha Valentine, 31, are "unequivocal proof that monsters walk amongst us", according to a horrified police chief.

Valentine has been handed a seven year sentence after prosecutors told a court that she attacked her baby multiple times over a four-day period.

Her defence had argued that Valentine suffered from mental health issues but the judge ruled that she could still be held responsible for her actions.

The judge said: "Regardless of the explanation of your actions, there is no excuse for your actions, your terrible, terrible actions, of attacking your own child."

Valentine from the city of Watervliet, in the US state of New York, was sentenced to seven years in prison for the attempted murder of her infant son, on Tuesday, April 25. Prosecutors said she attacked her baby repeatedly over four days in October 2021.

A statement from the Watervliet Police Department revealed at the time: "On October 16, 2021, the Watervliet Police Department responded to 2402 7th Ave for a complaint of a 10-month-old baby not breathing.

"Upon arrival, the officer was immediately escorted to a bedroom where he observed the child lying on its back in obvious medical distress.

"As a result, the officer initiated life-saving efforts until emergency medical personnel arrived.

"At the conclusion of an extensive investigation, it was determined the child's injuries were the result of several violent assaults by his mother, Samantha L. Valentine."

The police also said that they had arrested Valentine on October 26, 2021, and charged her with three counts of attempted murder in the second degree, assault in the second degree and endangering the welfare of a child.

Watervliet Police Chief Joseph Centanni said: "This defendant's actions are unequivocal proof that monsters walk amongst us. The brutal way this baby was assaulted defies all decency and compassion."

He added: "Parents are supposed to protect their children from danger, not act as the source of it.

"I can only ask the community to pray for the full cover of this precious child.

"Each member of the Watervliet Police Department will continue to work tirelessly to bring the people responsible for these types of criminal acts to justice."

The child suffered bleeding on the brain, with prosecutors saying he has now recovered.

In other news, a woman and her boyfriend, who tortured and killed her 10-year-old son over five days pouring hot sauce on his face and making other kids hurt him, were last night sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Heather Barron, 33, and Kareem Leiva, 37, were convicted by the judge in a non-jury trial of first-degree murder involving torture of Anthony Avalos.

They also were convicted of child abuse of two other children in their Lancaster home.

Prosecutors said Leiva sprayed hot sauce in the children’s faces; forced them to fight one another, with the loser being punished by him; and made the youngsters kneel for lengthy periods on concrete floors, nails or uncooked rice or squat until they fell over.
