A British tourist has been arrested after allegedly slicing off part of another holidaymaker’s ear with a broken glass at a Majorcan hotel bar during a row about politics.

The 35-year-old suspect was held after police turned up to find the victim, who is also from the UK, bleeding heavily on a sofa before following a trail of blood to the alleged aggressor’s room.

Local reports said he had been bailed after appearing before an investigating magistrate - but told he had to pay £6,200 to recover his passport if he wanted to catch a flight back to the UK scheduled for today.

The incident that led to the attack victim ending up in hospital in the town of Manacor, with part of his right earlobe missing and a neck wound, happened in the early hours of Saturday morning at an unnamed hotel at a small beach in the east coast resort of Cala d’Or called Cala Egos.

Respected island newspaper Ultima Hora said the injured man’s wife had told police when they arrived that the attack happened during a row in the hotel bar between both men about politics.

The newspaper said the victim was “too drunk” at the time to give his own statement at the scene before he was taken to Manacor Hospital after receiving initial medical attention at the hotel from paramedics.

The man who was arrested was also staying at the same hotel with his wife. Several hours are said to have elapsed between the incident and the arrest.

Police could not be reached for an official comment early this morning.

It was not immediately clear if medics had been able to reattach the severed part of the tourist's earlobe, or whether the suspect had handed over cash to recover his passport so he could fly back to Britain today as scheduled following the end of his Spanish holiday.

Cala Egos is a small semi-urban beach in the centre of Cala d’Or. The beach is a small stretch of white sand flanked by low cliffs covered in vegetation and enclosed between two hotels.

Last year, a "well-loved" British dad-of-two died after allegedly being knelt on by police and beaten up by bouncers in Magaluf, Majorca.

Tobias White-Sansom, 35, from Nottingham, died in hospital five days after the deadly incident on the Magaluf Strip in Majorca.

His millionaire brother Maximillian White, who made his fortune from medicinal cannabis, has described how the family night out turned to tragedy after Tobias visited the Boomerang nightclub last Tuesday.

Police say they were called to reports of an assault on a bouncer and the suspect had to be restrained and taken to hospital afterwards, where he died.

But Maximillian, who now lives in Dubai but owns a holiday home in Majorca, claims his brother had gone back inside a VIP area to retrieve his T-shirt, and was told his belongings had been put away.
