Barry Humphries' funniest moments are being shared by fans following the sad news the Dame Edna Everage star has died.

The Australian, 89, was revered all over the world for his irreverent wit, particularly when dressed up as his alter ego, Edna.

In 2019, the bespectacled star rocked up in the royal box alongside the then Prince Charles and his wife Camilla.

As the future king was in hysterics, the Dame was swiftly told to hop it before Edna saved face, saying: "They've found me a better seat."

But Barry wasn't just funny as Edna. He had viewers in stitches when he made an appearance on This Morning alongside Dermot O'Leary and Alison Hammond as himself.

Telling Dermot how proud he was of him for 'coming out about his sexuality' in reference to presenter Phillip Schofield's brave admission on the show, the Aussie left Alison in hysterics.

"I think a lot of people respected you for that," Barry continued as Dermot joked he'd "tell the gentleman in question who's here from Monday to Thursday."

Still with faux bemusement, Barry concluded: "Your bravery was amazing" before flashing a cheeky grin to the camera.

Presenter Jeremy Vine shared a link to the clip with the caption: "Barry Humphries today, and especially remembering this."

Tributes are pouring in for the star, including from the Prime Minister for Australia, Anthony Albanese, who tweeted: "For 89 years, Barry Humphries entertained us through a galaxy of personas, from Dame Edna to Sandy Stone. But the brightest star in that galaxy was always Barry. A great wit, satirist, writer and an absolute one-of-kind, he was both gifted and a gift. May he rest in peace."

Piers Morgan wrote: "RIP Barry Humphries, 89. One of the funniest people I’ve ever met.

"A wondrously intelligent, entertaining, daring, provocative, mischievous comedy genius. As hilarious in private as he was as the iconic Dame Edna. What a life, what a character. Thanks for all the laughs, Barry."
