Melanie Lynskey has said that losing touch with her former co-star Kate Winslet after working together had been "more heartbreaking" than some of her past break-ups.

They both made their film debuts in the acclaimed Heavenly Creatures (1994), which follows the relationship between two teenagers who end up committing a murder.

The project - which was based on a true story - was met with acclaim upon release and it launched the respective careers of its leads Melanie, now 45, and Kate, now 47.

The latter went on to star in films like Titanic (1997), whilst Melanie worked on projects such as Coyote Ugly (2000) and she's more recently starred in the TV series Yellowjackets.

The former co-stars are said to have "drifted apart" in the years since working on Heavenly Creatures, with Melanie discussing such on the Happy Sad Confused podcast.

Asked about dealing with moving on after production on the film ended, she said: "When I lost touch with Kate, it was more heartbreaking than some breakups that I've had."

"It was so painful and it wasn't like anything happened, it's just she became a gigantic, international movie star and she didn't have a lot of time," the actor further commented.

Melanie told podcast host Josh Horowitz that Kate ended up in Los Angeles whilst she was living elsewhere, adding that they "gradually" lost touch with each other.

The actor - who said she used to be "sensitive" over such friendships - commented: "It happens in relationships. People kind of drift apart but that was so painful for me."

Melanie said that she hasn't really crossed paths with former co-star Kate in the years since, though she did recall having last seen her at a film premiere more than a decade ago.

She said it was for Away We Go (2009), in which Melanie had a supporting role. The film had been directed by Sam Mendes, now 57, who was married to Kate at the time.

Melanie has appeared in a number of high-profile projects since that film was released, including playing Kathleen in the first season of The Last of Us earlier this year.

And she's received acclaim for her role as grown-up Shauna in Yellowjackets, which debuted in 2021. She reprised the role in its second season which is currently airing.
