Porto in Portugal is popular with those for city breaks thanks to its attractions, colourful houses and the world's oldest wine regions.

It's also a hit with foodies thanks to its budget-friendly options - but its Mcdonald's is particularly popular.

Dubbed the 'world's most beautiful', it's become a tourist attraction in its own right - and reporter Sophie Foster decided to check it out for herself.

The structure was created in 1930s and has plenty of Art Deco touches, as well as a huge bronze eagle statue at the entrance.

Sophie said: "When you enter the – admittedly very tasteful – eatery you’ll also see a glittering chandelier above your head as well as stone carvings on the walls. Mirrors surround you making the room seem larger than it is and the most interesting decor is the huge stained glass window behind the counter."

However, she said that "this is where the beauty of the revered McDonald's ends", as the floor, seats and tables are the standard design.

Still, the menu appears to have been just as fancy as you'd hope, with the likes of truffle burgers, soups and even beer on offer.

She noted: "With my partner, we spent a total of €27.30 – that’s £24 on two burgers, fries, drinks and a few extras. Unlike in the UK you can buy beer with your meal, but that wasn't the only addition to the menu.

"Some of the most interesting options were the soups, which are available for £1.50 each.

"We got mixed vegetable soup and cabbage soup, but unfortunately they were quite thin and tasted essentially like cup-a-soup.

"We also tried a truffle burger – the Maestro Cogumelos Maionese Trufada – which was delicious, and one I'd definitely eat again.

"It cost £6 and came loaded with mushrooms, Emmental cheese, truffle mayo, salad leaves and a beef patty."

Another burger on offer is the Rustic Chicken Mostarda e Mel which Sophie described as "the best savoury item we tried".

However, it was the dessert where the menu was particularly memorable, thanks to a Sundae Doce da Casa "which is like a McFlurry but way better".

The £1.63 dessert had ice cream crumbled biscuit and a custard-like sauce.

Sophie said: "It was absolutely delicious with a sugary, creamy topping – and I’d recommend going there just for this iconic pud."

While she enjoyed the experience, she admitted that "there are far more interesting and delicious eateries in the city".
