Bayern Munich have been warned Harry Kane is "too old and expensive" by club legend Lothar Matthaus, with the England captain once again linked with a move away from Tottenham this summer.

Kane's current deal with Spurs is set to expire in 2024, meaning the club may have to sell him in the summer to avoid the risk of losing him for free the following year, if he decides against renewing his contract. Bayern are among those interested in Kane's services, along with Manchester United who are the favourites to secure his signature.

Bayern are keen to strengthen their forward line, with Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting the only out-and-out striker on their books following Robert Lewandowski's move to Barcelona last summer.

However, Matthaus does not believe Bayern should look to sign Kane, 29, due to his age and value which is likely to be over £100m. Instead, the former Bayern captain named Napoli striker Victor Osimhen, Eintracht Frankfurt forward Randal Kolo Muani and Werder Bremen star Niclas Füllkrug as potential alternatives to Kane.

In a column for Sky Deutschland, Matthaus wrote: "I'm excited to see if a new striker comes along. Everyone is talking about Victor Osimhen for his sensational performance at Napoli. You never know if he can do that in Munich, but I think he would be a good fit.

"Randal Kolo Muani may need a little more room and space than a Bayern striker usually has, but he's also good in the box and could work in Munich. Harry Kane would be too old and too expensive for me.

"The price-performance ratio could speak for Niclas Füllkrug. He would probably be available for €20-25 million [£17.6m-£22m] and score 25 goals in Munich. He's already scored 20 times at Werder."

And Bayern's honorary president and supervisory board member Uli Hoeness has previously expressed similar thoughts on a potential move for Kane, telling Sky Deutschland last month: "I can imagine a player coming who costs €100m (£88m). But in the case of Kane in particular, I've expressed my opinion.

"He's almost 30 years old. Last year, Tottenham rejected an offer from City for €160m (£142m). That's why I said it wasn't a transfer for Bayern. I'm one of nine board members and if the other eight say he'll be bought, then he'll be bought. We live in a democracy."
