Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla offers sarcastic response to 'performance concerns'
Boston Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla offered a sarcastic response after being quizzed on whether he had any 'concerns' over his team's performance against the Atlanta Hawks.
The Celtics kicked off their NBA play-off campaign in perfect fashion, after defeating the Hawks 112-99 at TD Garden in Boston. Despite the victory, there were some question marks raised against the hosts after letting their opponents back into the clash in the second half following a dominant first two quarters.
This question was put to coach Mazzulla post-match, and whilst he admitted there was a slight drop off in performance, the sarcasm in his answer revealed he was not overly worried with the showing.
Asked in his press conference whether he was left 'concerned' with his team, the 34-year-old chuckled at the question before responding: "Yeah, I am very concerned." Seemingly sensing the sarcasm the reporter added: "No, but seriously?"
To which Mazzulla replied: "No I'm not [concerned] at all. I mean this team has played great for the entire season. That is going to happen, It is actually good that we went through it, we had to feel that and it is important we learn from that.
"So for us to get a win, and at the same time we [know] we can play better is good." A key component to the Celtics' battling victory came thanks to an impressive defensive play, with Marcus Smart playing an important role.
Lauding Smart's showing on Saturday, the head coach commented: " His pick-up points were great. He has a presence to be the quarterback on the defensive end, where we can change coverages, change matchups. And when he does that, our defense is special. It starts with him. I thought he brought it both physically and mentally.”
