People are just realising Adidas doesn't stand for 'All Day I Dream About Sports

Millions of us will be familiar with the Adidas brand - they are one of the biggest in the world and have stores in many countries.

But the story behind where the actual name Adidas came from is not so well-known, as many are just realising the truth behind it.

We become so familiar with the names that we see for these huge brands that it starts to get etched into our minds and we can't imagine it to be anything different.

If you were asked what you thought the Adidas name stood for, you would probably think it means 'All Day I Dream About Sports,' but it turns out this is a pretty common misconception.

To find out what these simple letters stand for, you have to go back to the founder of the store itself.

Adi Dassler first set up his company as a sports shoe brand in Germany in 1924, and it soon took off in popularity in the sports world.

His brother, Rudolf Dassler then joined him to take the company forward and help out in its success.

Soon, their shoe brand found popularity with some pretty big names wearing their products.

German runner Lina Radke and US sprinter Jesse Owens were two majorly prominent names to first show off their 'Adidas' sports shoe spikes during the Amsterdam Olympics in 1928 and Berlin in 1936 respectively.

But back then, it was not known as Adidas as we know it today, it was actually referred to as the Dassler Brothers Shoe Factory.

The brand then went through a turbulent period as World War II saw both brothers join the Nazi Party. Rudolf then found himself captured by American troops.

Suspecting his brother of tipping off the Americans, Rudolf split from Adi after the war and in 1948 made his own sports brand - Puma.

A year later, Adi started again and founded his company which he formally called Adidas - named after the founder himself.

The story was thought to be that Adi founded his company as 'All Day I Dream About Sport' to show off his huge passion for it, but it was actually just a nickname of his which he used in the name.

From there, Adidas stayed what it is today with its three striped logo being well-known across the world.
