A man hired to scatter ashes at sea in his charter boat allegedly kept the remains in his garage, it has emerged.

Cody Christopher Kenney, 29, from La Marque in Texas, US, has been charged with three counts of abuse of a corpse without legal authority, according to Galveston County Police.

The boat captain had been hired to spread the ashes of at least three people at sea but concerns were raised in October 2022 after police received a tip-off.

The Port of Galveston, where the boat was stationed, called police to confirm Mr Kenney had been one of their captains until he quit in September.

He would perform the ceremonies unaccompanied with the company making money by offering to spread the ashes of loved ones at sea.

However, it wasn't until a funeral home told the company they had found a set of cremated remains in a garage in Jamaica Beach, that suspicious were raised.

It was revealed Mr Kenney had earlier signed for the ashes and the remains were in fact left in his garage.

Kathy Thomas, a spokeswoman for the port, said: "It was later discovered that the remains were not properly disposed of and were found in Kenney’s residence."

A boat owner then found two more sets of cremated remains while cleaning the vessel, according to the suspect's affidavit.

Police said the motivation behind the suspect keeping the ashes remains unclear.

Mr Kenney was arrested on February 1 where he was taken to Galveston County Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday.

He is currently being held on a $15,000 (£12,000) bond.

The incident comes just days after an 82-year-old woman "died" at a care home but suddenly woke up at funeral home.

It is thought the woman, who has not been identified, was a resident at Water's Edge Rehab and Nursing Centre and staff there thought she had passed away.

She was moved from the care home on Long Island, New York State, to OB Davis Funeral Homes, at 11.15am on February 4, where she was discovered breathing just over half an hour later.

The woman was taken to hospital for treatment with officials investigating the incident.

Meanwhile, a care home in Iowa were fined $10,000 (£8,185) after a funeral home discovered a 66-year-old woman sent in a body bag was still alive.

The woman was found breathing despite having been declared dead at the Glen Oaks Alzheimer's Special Care Centre in Des Moines, Iowa, on January 3, according to the Iowa Department of Inspection and Appeals.
