Nine people including three children have been injured after a fairground ride detached from its base and collapsed.

Two of those hurt were treated for injuries at a hospital following the incident in Bojacá, Colombia, on April 7.

Eyewitnesses said they saw the ride come away from its base in the ground. It then crumpled under the strain and several people were trapped in the caged pods, with one left dangling in the air.

Another pod detached from the main structure, according to reports. A video shows that the ride apparently topples onto one side as workers and onlookers help the victims trapped in the pods.

Helpers tell the trapped riders not to make any sudden movements to avoid making the situation worse.

An investigation has been launched into how the incident happened.

Captain Álvaro Eduardo Farfán, spokesperson for the Cundinamarca Fire Department, said: "Nine people have been assessed, three of whom were minors.

"It was necessary to transfer two people, due to cervical trauma and lacerations, to health centres."

The fire department is also carrying out an investigation to establish whether organisers followed all relevant safety protocols prior to the collapse.

There have been no further updates on the two injured victims.

Last week, two children were taken to hospital after they were injured on a funfair ride.

Emergency services were rushed to the scene following the incident at the Hook Fair in Epsom, Surrey, with police officers arriving at the fairground shortly afterwards to close the ride and cordon off the area.

Photographs posted on social media also showed an air ambulance arriving at Hook Road Arena. The two children were admitted to hospital for assessment of their injuries, according to police.

Last year, a thrill ride in Mohali, India, hurtled out of control and crashed into the ground leaving dozens injured.

A video shared on social shows the ride lifting thrillseekers high into the air up an 80ft tower on a rotating platform, before a mechanical failure sends the screaming riders plummeting to the ground.

Those strapped into the attraction are visibly flung about, with one person's body forcefully swinging due to the impact as others are alleged to have come loose from their seats.

Aftermath footage shows panicked witnesses tending to those injured, including a woman looking after a child who is lying on the ground.

Victims received head and neck injuries and are said to be in a state of shock. The injured were reportedly admitted to hospital after being taken there by a nearby emergency vehicle, according to reports.
