A young footballer has suddenly died with his devastated family and club paying tribute.

Mason Peddle has been described as a "top guy" by friends and former players on his team AFC Portchester.

Tributes poured in for the footballer who captained the under-23 team.

In another Twitter post the club wrote: "Everyone at AFC Portchester is shocked and saddened to hear the news of the passing of Mason Peddle - captain of our under-23s side.

"Our thoughts and condolences go out to his family and friends at this difficult time. The club will be doing all it can to support his family."

Other football clubs quickly sent their condolences, too.

Baffins Milton Rovers FC paid tribute.

It wrote on Twitter: "Everyone connected with the club is deeply saddened to hear this devastating news.

"Our thoughts are with Mason’s family, friends and everyone connected with AFC Portchester at this sad time.

"Rest in peace, Mason."

Meon Milton Mens wrote: "Everyone at Meon Milton FC sends their condolences. Our thoughts are with the family and friends.

"Such a top guy he will deeply missed by all."

A GoFundMe page has also been set up by a friend, reading: "Hi am raising money all funds will go to masons family to help covers costs , mason was a lovely boy with a good heart very well known I would love to take any stress away from the family and help them at this terrible time."

Many also left tributes on the fundraising page, with Jeanette Warren writing: "A pleasure to work your birthday party and watch you party your absolute socks off. Rest in eternal peace Mason. My heart goes out to your family & friends. If only you knew you were so loved :( xxxxxxx'
