The results are in and the actor you'd most like to see take flight as 007 has left us all shaken and more than a little stirred.

You voted in your thousands and most Mirror readers want none other than Superman himself, Henry Cavill to take on the iconic role of James Bond.

With his chiselled good looks, piercing blue eyes and more suavity than you can shake a Walther PPK at, it's no wonder he's current joint favourite at the bookmakers along with Kick-Ass star Aaron Taylor-Johnson.

After Daniel Craig ended his 15-year stint as the world's most famous 'secret' agent, producers have been hunting high and low for that perfect replacement - and you weren't shy in telling us who YOU think it should be.

Henry Cavill was the runaway winner with 664 of your votes, with Happy Valley star James Norton coming in second with 297.

Hollywood A-lister Tom Hardy bagged 243 votes, the aforementioned Aaron Taylor-Johnson swooned in on 188 while the much-touted Idris Elba was last in the chasing pack on 186.

Making up the rest were Regé-Jean Page (79), Richard Madden (79), Cillian Murphy (57), Aidan Turner (56), Michael Fassbender (56), Taron Egerton (48), Robert Pattinson (14), Chiwetel Ejiofor (13) and Marvel's Chris Evans (10).

Many of you offered up alternative suggestions of who you'd like to see cast as James Bond.

There was a lot of love for Outlander star Sam Heughan, likewise Loki actor Tom Hiddleston.

Action veteran Jason Statham got a few shout-outs, as did Thor's Chris Hemsworth.

Perhaps surprisingly, several readers were keen for former 007 Pierce Brosnan to step back into the fray - though at 69 he may perhaps be too long in the tooth, but it all depends on where the producers want to take the franchise ...

An announcement is expected later this year, but Rocketman star Taron Egerton - who has been linked to the 007 role - recently said he believes sibling bosses Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson have 'already got someone' for the title role.

Since its debut in 1962 with Dr No, the 007 franchise has seen seven actors play James Bond - Sean Connery, David Niven, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig.

With a combined gross of over £5.7 billion to date, the Bond franchise is the fifth-highest-grossing film series of all time.

Our original story on who should take on the role sparked quite a lively debate, here are some of our favourite comments:

Top comments from our readers

Considerthis: "Henry Cavill gets my vote. I think he best fits Fleming's vision of Bond if he dyes his hair black; "slim build; a 3 in (76 mm) long, thin vertical scar on his right cheek; blue-grey eyes; a 'cruel' mouth; short, black hair, a comma of which rests on his forehead."

Billy 310: "Cavill - has the bearing; Hardy - no way - stick to slapstick; Taylor - needs a haircut; Norton - too thin; Turner - too hairy."

TruthSaya: "Much as I enjoy Bond movies, I think the character has had his day. Hacking is the new spying, you really don't need a Cold War relic everyone's expecting anymore. Bond has done it all, time to put him out to stud and find new stories to tell."

Suzy98: "James Norton - the guy even looks like Bond in that photo! McMafia was slick and highlighted how good he could be as Bond."

Zdzis: "Taylor-Johnson has absolutely no substance. Can't see how he's such a favourite. Turner, Page, and Norton are surprisingly bad fits. Hardy exudes a more working-class charm, but not the Connery kind.

"It's extremely hard to see past Elba and Cavill. Both are superb actors and have the physical presence and gravitas needed for the role."

Dragonqueen: "Henry Cavill for sure. He has the looks, acting skills and physicality to be Bond. Watch him in the last Mission Impossible movie - he can be a bad-ass."

Shells: "I think Mark Strong from the Kingsman would be good in role of Bond , James Bond"
