Miami Dolphins open to trading Cedrick Wilson to save millions in salary cap
Cedrick Wilson could be moved on within just a year of joining the Miami Dolphins, with a trade opening up a potential £5.6million ($7m) in cap space.
Wilson only joined the Dolphins in 2022 after being traded by the Dallas Cowboys off the back of a successful season. However, his start to life in Miami hasn't gone as planned and according to a report in the Miami Herald, the Dolphins are now open to a trade.
The Dolphins handed Wilson a three-year, £17.6m ($22m) contract last off-season, but following the signing of Braxton Berrios it's believed that the franchise are happy to part ways with the former Cowboys receiver. The versatility of Berrios is appealing to the Dolphins, with the returner also able to do a job in Wilson's role.
The Dolphins certainly aren't short in the receiver position, with Jaylen Waddle and Tyreek Hill both tag-teaming the role on a star-studded offense. But the Dolphins decided to add a bit more depth last off-season when signing Wilson, although it's a decision that hasn't paid off as expected.
Wilson impressed during the 2021 season, managing to score six touchdowns off just 45 receptions and finishing the campaign with 602 receiving yards to his name. But this standard didn't continue at the Dolphins, and Wilson was used sparingly over the course of the season.

The 27-year-old only managed 18 receptions last season, and didn't even make 150 yards for the Dolphins in an unfortunately quiet year. But cutting Wilson from the squad isn't really an option for the Dolphins, due to the guaranteed sum in his contract.
Wilson didn't enjoy a successful season after arriving from Dallas£4m ($5m) of Wilson's £5.6m ($7m) yearly contract with the Dolphins is guaranteed, meaning that cutting the receiver from the roster wouldn't save much space at all. A trade is their ideal option if they wish to recoup those funds, but finding a new team may be an issue.
After the year that Wilson had, finding a team that's willing to take on that contract is unlikely. Sure, Wilson's 2021 season with the Cowboys proved that he has the ability, but it's the only prolific campaign of his NFL career.
It could be a make-or-break season for Wilson if he's kept on, and it's a good time to enjoy another breakthrough campaign with the Dolphins eyeing a postseason run. Tua Tagovailoa will be hoping to stay fit in the quarterback position, and the acquisition of Jalen Ramsey will only boost their chances.
