Rihanna says she is 'open to exploring weird' music as she hints at new songs

Rihanna has admitted she is open to "exploring, discovering and creating" new music which she said fans will find "weird" compared to her usual sounds.

The 34-year-old singer hinted that new songs are coming as she said she wanted to "have fun" with the music.

"Musically, I’m feeling open. I’m feeling open to exploring, discovering, creating things that are new, things that are different, off, weird, might not ever make sense to my fans.

"I just want to play, I want to have fun with the music," she said during a Super Bowl press conference with Apple Music.

Rihanna is busy preparing for her upcoming Super Bowl show which will mark her first major live performance in six years.

She added: "To go on the biggest stage in seven years, there's something thrilling about the challenge of it all.

The star previously teased fans with a 30-second clip of her upcoming performance, in which she wears a feathered yellow shawl and silver chains as she emerges beneath a single white spotlight.

The clip is backed by her 2016 song Needed Me, as Rihanna appears with a striking hairstyle and stretches her arms out to the camera.

The video also has audio cuts from news reports saying: "It’s been over six years since the nine time Grammy winner" and other adding "Ri Ri where have you been?" before the shot cuts to the singer placing a finger to her lips.

Speaking about Rihanna's upcoming performance, Seth Dudowsky, NFL head of music, said: "We are thrilled to welcome Rihanna to the Apple Music Super Bowl Halftime Show stage.

"Rihanna is a once in a generation artist who has been a cultural force throughout her career.

"We look forward to collaborating with Rihanna, Roc Nation and Apple Music to bring fans another historic Halftime Show performance."

Jay-Z, founder of Roc Nation, added: "Rihanna is a generational talent, a woman of humble beginnings who has surpassed expectations at every turn.

"A person born on the small island of Barbados who became one of the most prominent artists ever. Self-made in business and entertainment."

The coveted Super Bowl slot is seen as a major milestone in music makers careers, with previous performers including Jennifer Lopez, Shakira and The Weeknd.

Rihanna previously declined to perform in the 2019 Super Bowl halftime show out of solidarity with former US football player Colin Kaepernick, who became recognised around the world for taking a knee to protest racial injustice in the US.
