Dion Dublin has urged Manchester United to sign Harry Kane, saying: “What can go wrong?”

The former Old Trafford favourite believes not only that Spurs’ striker is the missing link but also that he is on top of Erik Ten Hag’s wanted list. Dublin said that the answer to the spearhead the club has been crying out for is, potentially, already on the club’s books.

But he does not believe Marcus Rashford would be best suited to carrying the attack - and thinks that Kane’s arrival will automatically transform the club into genuine title challengers. He said: “Will it be Harry Kane? I think Manchester United want him - and I think it would work incredibly.

“I just want to see Harry win something as part of a team. He’s got a string of individual accolades. He’s the best in the business. But I just want him to be more successful within a team. I don’t want to see him win all these goalscoring awards, Golden Boots and all the rest of it without having a pot to put on the sideboard.

“The way he spoke about his England record when he surpassed Wayne Rooney’s total in Italy was high-class. He’s so chilled, focused and driven. He wants to score more goals.

“If he wins things at Spurs, I’ll be happy. If he has to leave to win things, I’ll be happy. But I want him to win some team trophies. Let’s be honest, if you put Harry into any side in the Premier League you could describe him as ‘the missing link.’

“He’s going to score 25 goals in any of them - not just at Manchester United - and they aren’t far off at all as it is. But the stature of him as a player, where he is, of his quality surrounded by Marcus, Jadon Sancho, Casemiro, Bruno Fernandes, Christian Eriksen - I don’t see how it can go wrong. If they can get Harry’s signing over the line, I think they will be bang in the frame to win the title.”

While Dublin, who won the Golden Boot back in 1998, believes Kane is the No.1 target, thinks there is an alternative - but doesn’t believe the man-in-question really wants the role.

He said: “Marcus Rashford is in the form of his life. Why? I think what has changed is that he’s been given some freedom on the left. He can float over to the right, through the middle. That bit of freedom is good for him. He can go where he wants and I think that’s helping him. Physically, he looks amazing.

“He’s playing football from the gods and I still believe there’s loads more to come from him. He’s that good. What Manchester United are missing - and this is going to shock no-one but it’s true - is that 25 goal-a-season striker in Kane’s mould.

“Could Marcus be the answer? I don’t think he is THAT centre-forward. He is good enough to nick between 15-20 goals a season from wherever he wants to play.

“But does he want to play with his back to goal? Probably not. Is he enjoying what he is doing now under Erik? I think he is. So could he be that centre-forward? He could be - but I don’t think so.”

Manchester United’s campaign could be stretched again next season by either continued involvement in the Europa League - or due to Champions League qualification. That could dilute any crack at the big domestic prize but Dublin thinks the challenge is something to be cherished.

He added: “Having spoken to Erik Ten Hag quite a few times now, what he brings is a no-excuse culture. He doesn’t go looking for them. His attitude is: ‘If we are in a competition and it brings more games - then we’ll just get on with it.’

“There’s a realisation with him that Manchester United are one of the biggest clubs in the world and if the club has a lot of games to play then it’s because the team is good.

“It’s a positive way to look at it and I think that’s the right way to look at it, too. If you get into Europe, how lucky are you? To be playing Juventus, AC Milan or whoever.

“With the players Manchester United have, they should embrace it. It should be something to be attacked, rather than feared with the players they have.”
