Bruno Fernandes took to social media to praise Scott McTominay after the Manchester United midfielder bagged a brace in Scotland's remarkable 2-0 win over Spain on Tuesday night.

McTominay helped Scotland get their Euro 2024 qualification campaign off to the perfect start when he scored twice in their 3-0 win over Cyprus on Saturday. And the Manchester United academy graduate was at it again just four days later to put Spain to the sword at Hampden Park.

The 26-year-old's nudged Steve Clarke's side into a seventh minute lead with a deflected effort before he crashed home a second just six minutes after the break to stun the former world champions.

And McTominay's impressive goalscoring cameo earned him plenty of plaudits; including from Fernandes. In his Instagram story, the Portuguese playmaker shared a clip of McTominay celebrating after the match with the caption 'What a player mcterminator".

But while Fernandes was impressed with McTominay's match-winning performance, Manchester City midfielder Rodri was left fuming with Scotland's "rubbish" tactics after the match.

“It’s the way they play - for me it’s a bit rubbish. It’s always wasting time, they provoke you, they always fall. For me, this is not football,” he fumed while speaking to Viaplay.

“The referee has to take a part in this but he said nothing. It’s a bit frustrating because we want to win and it’s difficult because they waste time, waste time. It is what it is. They have their weapons, we have our weapons, and we will learn for next time.”

Rodri's scathing assessment of Scotland's performance is unlikely to take any gloss off the result for McTominay, though, who paid tribute to the fans on a special night for Scottish football.

“We did really, really well," McTominay told Viaplay after the match. “We knew they'd have lots of the ball, and the manager said be clinical when we had the opportunities, and I thought we had enough opportunities tonight to really hurt them and score some goals.

“As a kid, I was an attacking midfielder - I like to get in the box. I've got to keep doing that, I know I can add more goals and assists to my game.

“Everyone was at it, diving around, making the game slow. It's difficult, but sometimes that's the way it's got to be. When you're winning you've got to do stuff like that. Look at this place - I've never seen anything like it, it's incredible!

“The manager said this is our chance to create legacies as Scotland players and these are the nights in 20, 30 years that people remember. We can't thank the fans enough.”
