Former BBC presenter Andrew Neil has taken aim at Match of the Day star Gary Lineker’s seven figure pay check and hinted he thinks the star should be cut from the national broadcaster.

The 73-year-old veteran political broadcaster has seemingly waded into the rumbling argument over 62-year-old Gary - who sparked debate this month by comparing proposed UK immigration law changes to the actions of 1930s Germany.

And it seems Andrew has hinted he thinks Gary should be sacked from the BBC in order for the corporation to save some money to invest elsewhere.

He lashed out at his fellow broadcaster when he highlighted the fact that the BBC Singers are set to be disbanded in a money saving move by the Beeb - and relaying that they cost effectively the same per year as Gaz.

Taking to Twitter on Saturday, Andrew wrote: “The fantastic BBC Singers, Britain’s only professional chamber choir, to be disbanded in July to save about £1.5m, only a tad above Gary Lineker’s annual BBC salary.”

Andrew added: “Strange priority for a supposedly public-service broadcaster.”

Gary, who is something of a prolific tweeter himself, has as yet failed to rise to respond to Andrew’s savage tweet.

He has, however, clashed with fellow BBC star Lord Alan Sugar via the platform.

Lord Sugar waxed lyrical on Twitter on Saturday, writing: “Problem with Spurs even under my chairmanship is the mood/culture of the players.

“They don't play as a team with camaraderie or passion. All they do is moan we need more players. I recall saying to a player. ‘More players do you mean you are no good should we replace you’.”

But Gary disagreed, and dismissed Lord Sugar’s view as “nonsense” in a response tweet of his own.

Also on Saturday, Gary made his triumphant return to Match of the Day having missed the previous weekend’s show as he took a ‘step back’ form the BBC amid furore over his views being expressed online.

The former footballer sparked anger, but also gained huge support, when he hit out via Twitter at Government plans to change laws relating to immigration rules.

His tweets caused an argument over BBC personalities expressing political views as those employed by the corporation are supposed to adhere to strict rules about impartiality.

Political broadcaster Andrew Neil worked for the BBC for 25 years before leaving the corporation in 2020 and helping set up rival news station GB News.

He then departed GB News mere weeks after it launched - before going on to complain that he considered it a “mistake” for him to ever work at the station.

Andrew subsequently returned to broadcasting on Channel 4 - launching his political programme, The Andrew Neil Show, in May last year and with the series airing on Sundays.
