Manchester City and Chelsea could face each other in the semi-finals of the Champions League after a nightmare draw on Friday.

Pep Guardiola's side will face Bayern Munich after Erling Haaland's five-goal haul against RB Leipzig, while Graham Potter's men will take on defending champions Real Madrid. The winners of those two ties will then face each other in the semi-finals.

Napoli will take on Serie A rivals AC Milan in the other side of the draw, while Inter Milan face Portuguese giants Benfica. Napoli, who sit 18 points clear at the top of Serie A, are now the favourites to reach the final in Istanbul, Turkey on June 10.

Here is how the draw unfolded...

Nightmare for Man City and Chelsea

Quite simply, that draw could not have gone any worse for Chelsea and Manchester City.

Chelsea will take on Real Madrid in the quarter-finals, with the winners of that tie facing either City or Bayern Munich.

That means one of AC Milan, Inter Milan, Napoli or Benfica will reach the final.

A remarkable draw.

Andy Dunn on Pep Guardiola's European bid

Leaving aside the slightly bizarre Julia Roberts comments, Pep Guardiola knows winning the Champions League - or not winning the Champions League - will, to a large extent, define his time at Manchester City.

The argument goes that it is, ultimately, what he was employed to do and that he has certainly been given the resources to make the task possible. It is a compelling argument but let’s get one thing straight. If Guardiola walks away from the Etihad without having won Europe’s blue riband prize, he will be no failure.

How could any manager who has produced a brand of football that has been consistently brilliant over a period not far short of seven years be seen as a failure?

Potter's rallying cry

Graham Potter has delighted supporters by showing another side to his personality during an event for Chelsea fans.

At the end of the night, he was asked for his message to the fans. He replied: "Firstly, thank you because they’ve been incredibly fair with us, they’ve stuck with the team, the support we’ve had has been amazing.

"And we’ll need them in Saturday – we’ll try and beat Everton and then we’ll take the draw, and then we’ll try and win the f****** Champions League!"

But who will Chelsea get in the quarter-final draw? Stay tuned to find out...

Courtois says Madrid can see off PL clubs again

Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois believes the club’s continued success in Europe can offset the power of the Premier League.

For the fifth time in six seasons England’s top flight will have at least two representatives in the quarter-finals of the competition the Spanish giants have won a record 14 times.

Six Premier League teams have featured in the last five finals – two were all top-flight occasions – and Liverpool and Chelsea have won one apiece, which is the same number Real have won over the same period after three in four years from 2014-17.

So while English clubs may have the financial might, the LaLiga giants have shown they are still the side to be reckoned with at Europe’s elite level and a 6-2 aggregate victory over Liverpool put them into the last eight again.

“It’s hard to say whether it’s the best league or not but definitely with the new investment in Chelsea, City and Newcastle, there is a lot of attraction to go to the Premier League,” said former Chelsea goalkeeper Courtois, who cited Manchester City’s signing of Erling Haaland as an example.

“It’s a really exciting league, that’s for sure, a big competitive league and the level is really high. But I think we demonstrate that we have a big team and that you cannot under-estimate Spanish teams. We showed it again.

“It’s obviously nice to beat English teams because I was there for a few years, but when you’re in the Champions League you want to win against everybody – maybe next it’s Portuguese and Italian clubs.”
