A man has admitted being the getaway driver in the robbery of boxer Amir Khan's £70,000 diamond watch.

Today (Thursday, March 16), Ahmed Bana, 25, admitted his part in the plot at Southwark Crown Court and prosecutors said he was the driver of the silver Mercedes that dropped Dante Campbell, 20, and another unknown suspect at the scene and that then served as the getaway vehicle.

Khan, 36, was targeted last year along with his wife Faryal, 31, as they left the Sahara Grill restaurant in Leyton, east London, on April 18 last year.

Bana, who was re-arraigned on the charges on Thursday, admitted to conspiracy to commit robbery and possession of an imitation firearm.

The judge told the jury to return guilty verdicts after the plea.

Campbell forced the 2004 Olympic silver medallist to hand over a bespoke rose gold diamond-encrusted Franck Muller watch, worth between £60,000 to £70,000.

Campbell pleaded guilty to the charges against him.

Khan said his wife was left “screaming and crying” after the robbery and said he was "really scared".

“I’m a sportsman, I’m a fighter. I have always been put in the toughest situations when I go into the ring and fight someone, but this was totally different, very, very scary," he told the jury.

Khan was confronted as he went to open the door of the car, driven by their friend Omar Khalid. The CCTV showed the gun being pointed at the boxer and him handing over his watch.

Khan, a former unified world champion at light welterweight, was confronted by an armed robber who pointed the gun in his face and said "take off the watch".

CCTV of the incidents was captured and played to the jury. Khan and his wife were shown smiling as they left the restaurant.

Judge Louise Kamill said: “Members of the jury, you are in charge of a man’s guilt or otherwise.

“You being in charge means you must return the verdict and therefore I’m going to ask our clerk please to put the counts to you and I’m going to choose one of your number just to respond to the clerk’s questions.

"The defendant has admitted his guilt in your presence. The trial continues against the other two defendants.”

Nurul Amin, 24, and Ismail Mohammed, 25, both deny conspiracy to commit robbery.

Along with another man who is not on trial, Amin and Mohamed are alleged to have acted as spotters by dining in the restaurant to keep track of Khan and Makhdoom.

The trial continues.
