A man who murdered his wife with a samurai sword made a video confessing to his wife's murder on his phone, it has emerged.

William Eagers, 62, had punched victim Jean Eagers, 57, in the face just weeks before he took her life in a horrific attack at home.

It is understood that he also planned to take his own life following the savage killing in Clonsilla, north Dublin in Ireland.

The former export operations manager and part-time taxi driver is to be handed down a mandatory life-sentence later this month after he pleaded guilty to the murder on 21 June, 2020.

Before 11.30am on the day of the murder, Eagers walked upstairs and got his samurai sword before he came down and repeatedly stabbed Jean, the Irish Mirror reports.

Another family member, who was also in the home, quickly fled to a neighbour's house and raised the alarm.

The Garda Armed Support Unit arrived soon afterwards and established from outside that the victim was seriously injured as Eagers barricaded himself inside the house.

After repeated attempts to engage with Eagers, they stormed through the front window of the home and used a stun grenade as a distraction before they tasered and arrested the then-suspect.

Following the murder, Eagers made recordings on his phone in which he made admissions to killing Jean, 57, according to The Irish Mirror.

The phone was seized by gardai following a search of the house after the arrest.

Sources say that investigators believe he had planned to take his own life after the attack on his wife.

A source said: "He made admissions in recordings and he was going to take his own life if gardai didn't arrive when they did.

"He had one self-inflicted wound by the time armed gardai got into the home."

Eagers spent nine days in hospital under armed guard before he was released, and was taken into custody for questioning prior to being charged.

It is understood that Eagers had faced financial pressure after the coronavirus pandemic and restrictions put in place.

But he also had become increasingly violent towards his wife, and had punched Jean at their home a few weeks before the murder.

It is likely the reason why he took her life in the way he did may never be known.

Jean, a mum-of-two who was "adored" by her son and daughter, is understood to have lived with her family in Willow Wood Grove, Hartstown for around 30 years.

One former colleague at Marks & Spencer in nearby Blanchardstown told in the days following the killing how she was "the kindest, sweetest soul" she had ever met.

Speaking at the time, Chloe Shaw said: "On the darkest days she made them brighter and on the brightest days she made them even brighter.

"Jean loved everyone and I can honestly say we loved her too. Jean has always been interested in my life and always made me feel part of hers.

"She loved helping people and she gave the best advice. She really gave the best hugs. I am truly grateful to have worked with Jean and I can honestly say she has a special place in my heart."

Last Friday, William Eagers took to the dock before Mr Justice Paul McDermott and spoke only to answer "guilty" when the charge was read to him during the brief arraignment.

The mandatory sentence for murder in the Republic of Ireland is life imprisonment.

Mr Justice McDermott fixed March 24 next for a sentencing date.
