Former BBC One host Jason Manford has backed sports star Gary Lineker after the football legend's comparison between the government's new Illegal Migration Bill and Nazi Germany.

The Match of the Day presenter, 62, had retweeted a Home Office video on its new Illegal Migration Bill and described it as "beyond awful", referring to the language used by the Nazis in Germany during that period.

Lineker has refused to delete the tweet, which brought claims against impartiality as a BBC employee, but he has since hinted that he will escape suspension over it.

Now stand-up star Manford, 29, has waded into the row by sharing a link to a news article reporting on Gary Lineker's comparison and Home Secretary Suella Braverman's tactics.

He tweeted: "She is an absolutely disgusting human being and an embarrassing politician. Awful. Hate filled. How she is still in a job I do not know (well I do obviously!)

In an earlier tweet, Manford fumed it was "disgusting" that the Home Secretary does not offer immigrants the same help that her own parents received all those years ago.

His post continued: "Also how does someone go from her parents being ‘immigrants’ to being like this? It’s absolutely shocking! What is Suella Braverman thinking? My family are alright but nobody else can come here? Disgusting and shameful."

Manford is the latest to show support for the former England footballer who sparked the debate after he responded to a video message by the home secretary, Suella Braverman, about small boats being stopped crossing the Channel.

Lineker wrote: “Good heavens, this is beyond awful.”

And standing by his comments, responding to a follower, he added: “There is no huge influx. We take far fewer refugees than other major European countries.

“This is just an immeasurably cruel policy directed at the most vulnerable people in language that is not dissimilar to that used by Germany in the 30s, and I’m out of order?”

The topic continued to dominate the news agenda before Lineker tweeted yesterday thanking fans for his 'overwhelming support', as he plans to present Match of the Day on Saturday.

Meanwhile Manford has faced abuse from trolls after a recent scandal saw him betray his wife by sharing sexual messages and images with 12 female fans over the internet.

He told it was 'flirting that went to far, saying: “with a few it went over the line.”
