Meta has recently announced a new pricing system for its VR headsets which includes a price drop on the Meta Quest 2.

After increasing prices on the Meta Quest 2 last year, Meta has somewhat backpedalled on this decision in a recent blog post, with its 256GB version taking a £70 price cut, bringing it down to a new retail cost of £429.99. However, the 128GB edition of the headset still sits at its increased price of £399, meaning you are now able to get double the memory for just £30 extra.

This system isn't the only device seeing a price drop, with Meta confirming that its newest headset, the Meta Quest Pro will also be seeing £500 slashed off of its retail cost bringing it down to a more reasonable, (yet still expensive!) £1000 for the professional augmented reality headset. We will be seeing this new price for the Meta Quest Pro go live on Wednesday, March 15.

Alongside this new pricing system, Meta is also running a deal from now until June 3, 2023 in which every purchase of a Meta Quest 2 comes with two free games, Golf+ and Space Pirate Trainer DX, which would usually come in at a combined total of £38.

  • Meta Quest 2 256GB with two free games at Amazon UK- £429
  • Meta Quest 2 256GB with two free games at Meta UK - £429

Both of these retailers offer free shipping, however, when buying from Amazon you get the advantage of Amazon Prime delivery meaning you should receive your headset the next day.

Does this have something to do with PSVR 2?

After the extremely successful launch of PSVR 2 last month, it seems Meta has scrambled to reduce the price of its flagship headset in order to compete. The newest VR headset from Sony has been a massive competitor for the Meta Quest 2 since its announcement, with better specifications – but of course the downside is being tethered to your PS5 console.

In my PSVR 2 review, I noted that the resolution and framerate increase on the headset when compared to the Meta Quest 2 made it much more pleasant to play on. Since then I've started using it as my main VR headset after almost three years with my beloved Meta Quest 2.

Although PSVR 2 comes in at a higher price point, it's only by a small margin of £30, making it seem like more of a worthwhile investment. However, this price cut now makes us wonder as consumers about which headset to purchase. Has this brought Meta back into the running? We'll have to wait and see.
