UK's top 10 cities with the best drivers named - see if your area made the cut

The best drivers in cities around the UK have been ranked in a new study.

Researchers analysed fatal, serious and slight traffic accidents as well as test centre pass rates and the percentage of those who pass the first time and how many passed with no faults.

The results revealed Preston was the top city with the best driver with only 0.06 per 10,000 fatal traffic accidents and only 12.7 serious or slight accidents per 10,000 people.

The city also held one of the highest pass rates in the country at 61 per cent and the highest number of people passing on their first attempt with no faults (174).

Insurance broker One Sure Insurance, carried out research to see where the best drivers in the UK hailed from.

Aberdeen came in at second with 6.41 serious or slight traffic accidents per 10,000 people.

62% of drivers passed also their test on their first attempt with 132 passing with 0 faults since April 2022, making the drivers in the city some of the safest.

In third came Cardiff with very few fatal accidents - only 0.16 per 10,000 people.

Cardiff also had one of the highest test centre pass rates in Wales with a pass rate of 59.2%.

Towards the lower end of the ranking, London came in at seventh with 0.19 road fatalities and only 7.23 serious and slight traffic accidents per 10,000 people.

However, the city ranked low in test centre pass results with only 44.8% of people passing overall and only 45% of those passing the first time.

In last place came Southend-on-sea, with 14.80 accidents per 10,000 people, which is less than Chelmsford and Newport who came in at eighth and ninth place.

However fewer drivers we found to have passed their test with 0 faults (18 over the past year) compared to other cities.

  9. Chelmford
  10. Southend-on-sea

A spokesperson from One Sure Insurance said: “On average someone is injured or killed on roads in the UK every 16 minutes. The majority of these accidents are caused by speeding. Bad driving can lead to preventable accidents, death and damage that could cost you.

"Learning to drive is important for many to gain freedom and independence; however, it's important that people are driving safely and responsibly.

"This data does show a correlation between the cities that have lots of people passing first time, and fewer road accidents and fatalities. Meaning that these cities are more likely to have safe and good drivers on the roads.”
