It was a Sunday afternoon for the ages at Anfield, but Jurgen Klopp already knows that it has to mean something.

Liverpool were utterly irresistible at times as they blew away Manchester United by seven goals to nil, with six of the strikes coming in the second half as the visitors were left undressed, unable and embarrassed.

United had arrived on Merseyside with their tails up, with a trophy in the bag and with confident boasts from a few of their former players who sensed the chance to redress the balance in a rivalry which has been largely all Liverpool's in recent years. Some even suggested that tables had already turned.

But while this has been a fitful Liverpool season, this is also a Liverpool side who still possess quality in all areas.

Klopp is aware of that more than most, often facing down critics this season as he's delivered a fierce defence of his players.

They're not as bad as many of the results suggest they are, he'll say. Even if those results have been startlingly bad at times.

Although not as bad as this one was for United.

As far as Klopp was concerned when he faced the press post-match though, it was a result which had already passed into the ether, with the Reds boss evoking memories of August's 9-0 win over Bournemouth as an example of why he and his players shouldn't go too overboard with the result of one match.

Clearly expecting to be told that his side had a disappointing result in their next game, Klopp responded to a question about his side's newfound confidence by asking a packed press room: "Does anybody here know when we won against Bournemouth 9-0 what the next result was? I don't know it."

The Reds boss was then informed that it was the 2-1 win over Newcastle in late August courtesy of Fabio Carvalho's 98th minute winner.

"Oh we won?" he said with a surprised look on his face. "So that's good. Yeah in the last second. It was a completely different game though huh? A fantastic game."

Stringing together performances from one week to the next has been the big issue for Liverpool this season, but when they are in full working order and look as intense as they did here then they can be a match for anyone. More than a match.

The reality of their battle for a place in the top four is that the teams they are now in competition with are vulnerable to dropping points, even if such a concept had been considered to be the end of the world when they were going head-to-head with Manchester City for the title.

"Our goal difference doesn't look like we won one game 9-0 and one game 7-0 to be honest with you, we know that," continued Klopp.

"But I love the performance, I love the three points. The result is good as well, but from now I won't carry that around."

It is the return with Bournemouth next, and the only result that will matter to the Reds manager in another win.
