Jurgen Klopp was livid with a fan who invaded the pitch and slid into Andy Robertson as Liverpool celebrated their final goal against Manchester United.

The Reds roared to one of their greatest-ever victories on Sunday evening, hitting seven goals past their arch-rivals at a frenzied Anfield. Each of the starting front three of Mohamed Salah, Cody Gakpo and Darwin Nunez found the back of the net twice and Roberto Firmino added the final goal with seconds remaining.

It was a truly embarrassing defensive display by the Red Devils, many of whom lost all composure as a second half during which they conceded six goals wore on. As for Liverpool, it was one of the most famous results in the club's history - and one over-exuberant fan took things too far after Firmino's goal.

The supporter entered the pitch and clattered into Robertson, prompting fears the left-back - who was immaculate throughout the match - was injured. Fortunately, Robertson was able to see out the remaining minutes before soaking up the adulation of the Anfield faithful at the full-time whistle.

While Klopp was furious with the fan responsible - who was removed by stewards - for wiping out one of his players, there was soon a beaming grin across his face as he revelled in a truly astonishing result for his side, who have struggled throughout the season but sent an emphatic reminder that form is temporary and class is permanent.

"It's a fantastic day for everyone," Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson said on Sky Sports after the match. "The performance levels, every player was top quality. You could see the energy levels were back.

"We have shown recently we are on the path back. It's a big win but we need to concentrate on the next game. I'm really happy for Mo [Salah]. He dedicates his life to football. He is the first one in and the first one out."

Salah joined Henderson for post-match media duties and added: "It is very special to win a game like that. We need to stay humble and win our games. Hopefully, it will give us a big push. It's very special, I cannot lie. To get it today against Manchester United is unbelievable."

Liverpool's extraordinary victory over United is a major boost as they look to recover from a poor first two-thirds of the season to finish in the Champions League spots. The Reds rose to fifth in the table, leapfrogging Newcastle, and will climb into the top four if they win their game in hand on Tottenham. United, meanwhile, may have to admit defeat in the title race as they find themselves 14 points behind leaders Arsenal having played one game fewer.
