Snow has been forecast to hit the UK next week with temperatures dipping below 0C, according to BBC Weather.

Despite spring drawing closer, the cold weather is set to last longer as wintry conditions look to return once again.

The snowfall is predicted to fall from Tuesday (March 7) with some parts of the country reaching temperatures as low as -2C.

Much of the snowfall on the Tuesday was forecast to fall in the morning and evening, with sleet and light rain more likely during the day.

Further snow was expected to fall on March 9 with lows of -3C and temperatures reaching no higher than 2C.

In BBC Weather's monthly outlook from March 5 to March 12, it reported bands of showers and snow progressing south of the UK.

It said: "High pressure is most likely to shift farther away to the north-west early next week and that should open the door to fronts and troughs moving down from the north, with a chance of small low-pressure circulations developing.

"As a result, it's going to be a lot more unsettled with bands of showers and snow showers progressing southwards. These have a risk of merging into more persistent precipitation at times.

"It could also increasingly turn to snow at lower elevations as north-west to northerly winds increase and drag much colder air southwards across the UK."

BBC Weather said the amount and extent of snow was still unknown, and it would be a while until it can pinpoint the possibilities.

It added: "Through the middle of the week many areas will become drier with greater chances of sunshine as the rain, sleet, and snow showers become more confined to windward coasts."

Conditions were likely to become milder with winds expected, however, in the northern side of the UK, cold chilly air is said to be expected plus a likely chance of even more snow.

The Met Office had also predicted a likely chance of snow in the UK.

In its long-range forecast for March 5 to March 14, it said: "On Sunday, a mixture of sunny spells with scattered showers likely in the north and east, turning particularly wintry over northern hills and in the far northeast at times, and perhaps becoming more frequent in the north later. Drier conditions with sunny spells are expected in the rest of the country, with isolated showers possible at times.

"Light winds are expected for most, but moderate or fresh in the east. For the rest of the period, settled conditions are most likely across the country, with some wintry showers and snow the north and east at times.

"There is an increasing chance of it turning more unsettled later with spells of rain or snow becoming more likely. Temperatures overall will be below average, but gradually trend up through the period."
