Mogul kills 3-year-old son before shooting himself dead in luxury Miami condo
A businessman who was facing a prison sentence and his three-year-old son were found shot dead in an apparent murder-suicide at a luxury Miami apartment.
The boy's mum made the horrific discovery at the Florida condos, which sell for up to $9 million (£7,488,000).
Jose Manuel Gonzalez Testino, 53, was about to be sentenced for bribery and his role in a money laundering scheme.
He and his son Jose Manuel Gonzalez were found dead with gunshot wounds at the Grove at Grand Bay Condominiums Association on Wednesday at around 8pm.
The mother of the child had contacted police asking them to check on the pair's welfare after becoming concerned when her son missed soccer practice and she did not hear from the father.
Man in 30s dies after being stabbed in park sparking police probeWhen the officers were unable to break down the door, the mother went to the condo herself.
She made her way to one of the top units, and once inside made the horrifying discovery, the Miami Herald reported.
Miami Public Information Officer Michael Vega confirmed to DailyMail.com that the man was the boy's father and said that “he had the child legally since Monday”.
It has not yet been confirmed whether the parents were involved in a custody dispute over the child, but police did confirm that he usually lives with his mother.
Relatives had contacted police on Wednesday because they did not hear from the father, which they told authorities was unusual.
Police, crime scene investigators, a medical examiner's van and a chaplain from the police department were at the scene on Thursday.
Gonzalez Testino had pleaded guilty to charges related to a bribery and corruption scheme connected to Venezuela's petroleum company PDVSA, and its US subsidiary, Citgo, in May 2019.
He had five extensions on the sentencing, according to the United States District Court for the Southern District of Texas-Houston Division.
The Grove at Grand Bay Condominiums Association was built in 2016 and consists of two 20-story towers that host 98 four-to-six bedroom apartments.
The development's website claims that the building's iconic signature “twist” design offers 254 uniquely different views of the Biscayne and Miami skyline.
