Patrick Mahomes has insisted he will play through any and all injuries in order to take part in Super Bowl LVII.

In the first quarter of the their Divisional Round win over the Jacksonville Jaguars, Mahomes suffered a high-ankle sprain as he was tackled by Corey Peters and Arden Key, who fell on the quarterback’s lower right leg. Mahomes - the frontrunner for the league’s MVP award - fell awkwardly and writhed in pain on the turf.

Mahomes went to the locker room while backup Chad Henne briefly took control of the Chiefs offence before he returned in the second half. He soldiered on to lead the Chiefs to victory regardless before doing the same in the AFC Championship against the Cincinnati Bengals.

When asked about his injury on Super Bowl Opening Night in Arizona, Mahomes said: “It’s definitely better for sure. You never know until you get into the game, but it’s definitely better than it was this time last week before the game.

“I’ll play through all the injuries that the trainers let me play through.”

He smiled and added: “Travis Kelce hurts my feelings like every single day and I still play so I’m still going to play through it and try to get a win.”

Mahomes is hoping to return to having a winning record in Super Bowl contests on Sunday. In Super Bowl LIV, the 27-year-old led the Chiefs to victory over the 49ers before his team were crushed by Tom Brady’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers in February 2021.

Mahomes has clearly not forgotten the pain of losing as he discussed the two differing Super Bowl experiences. The 2018 MVP said: “The win was amazing and one of the best moments of my entire life, but that loss stings. It’s motivated me for years.

“It’s motivated me to be back in this game again and I want to make sure I get that winning feeling again and not the losing one because that feeling was one I will never forget.”

The Chiefs will face the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LVII at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Arizona on February 12.
