A woman enjoying a Zumba class was hit in the leg by a stray bullet when a man shot and missed his intended target.

Adriana Lavin, from Colorado, was at the fitness studio on Wednesday January 25 when two bullets came through the window.

She dropped to the floor but one of the shots hit her leg.

Recounting the incident from hospital she told KDVR: "At the moment I wanted to, I couldn't, because I fell.

"I was bleeding from my legs."

Police investigating the shooting claim Diego Sanchez, 36, was firing at a car but missed, instead hitting Ms Lavin who was working out.

Suspect Sanchez turned himself in and faces charges of attempted first-degree murder, first-degree assault, illegal possession of a firearm, and multiple counts of criminal mischief.

Stray bullets also hit another nearby car. When the bullets tore into the fitness studio in Arvada, Colorado, everyone inside dropped to the floor.

Ms Lavin continued: "Everyone's reaction was to drop to the floor.

"My reaction was to grab a child that was in my club."

First responders provided first aid for Ms Lavin before taking her to hospital.

She recalled: "They put a tourniquet on my legs so I wouldn't keep bleeding, because I was bleeding a lot."

Police later found the area peppered with bullets, discovering bullet holes in walls and windows of several businesses.

Ms Lavin is recovering in hospital.

She said: "I can't get surgery on it because the bullet landed very close to a main artery and it can't get taken out without causing more damage."

Gun crime is on the rise in the US, especially mass shootings.

Over the last three years there have been more than 1800 such incidents, an average of almost two a day.

California has been rocked by three mass shootings so far this month.

First 11 people were killed after a man opened fire on a crowd celebrating Lunar New Year at a dancehall in Monterey Park.

This was shortly followed by a gunman killing seven at two farms around Half Moon Bay.

IN the early hours of Saturday, three people were killed and four more injured in a shooting in the up-market neighbourhood of Beverly HIlls.

Police are investigating this incident but so far no arrests have been made.
