The Chase fans baffled as 'wrong answer' accepted amid u-turn over pronunciation

The Chase attracted attention last night over the pronunciation of a well-known landmark, five years after a similar situation had arisen but with a different result.

The latest episode of the ITV quiz show another four new contestants showcase their general knowledge. They were up against chaser Shaun Wallace, 62, for the chance to win.

Among them was Joslyn, who works for a charity. She was the second person to take on the Cash Builder round, and her first correct answer attracted attention from viewers.

She rightly thought the answer was the Leaning Tower of Pisa, but some fans considered her response to be wrong, because they felt she had mispronounced the city in Italy.

The popular show's host Bradley Walsh, 62, had asked the contestant during the initial round: "According to experts, what Italian bell tower is slowly straightening up?"

Joslyn seemed unsure at first before giving her answer. She thought that it was the Tower of Pisa, though some viewers felt that she pronounced the city as "pizza".

Her answer was accepted by Bradley. Joslyn went on to answer two more questions correctly in the Cash Builder round, giving her £3,000 for the Head-to-Head round.

Viewers took to Twitter over her answer, with some finding it amusing. One wrote alongside a laughing emoji: "Did she say pizza?" Another tweeted: "Leaning tower of pizza?"

"She definitely said pizza," wrote a third viewer. Another teased in their response that it had them feeling hungry. A fifth took to the platform to ask others: "She said pizza?"

Others however felt it was an incorrect answer. One fan said: "Did she say 'The Tower of Pizza'? I'm sure she said Pizza, which is wrong." They weren't alone in the sentiment.

Seemingly agreeing with that tweet, one viewer said in a reply: "Definitely." Whilst another person had written about the situation yesterday: "That's surely a point docked".

It isn't the first time the Leaning Tower of Pisa has attracted attention as an answer though. There was a similar situation in 2018, as reported by the Express at the time.

Contestants in the Final Chase round were asked: "What famous Italian bell tower began in 1173?" One member of the team, Colin, thought it was the leaning tower in Pisa.

He appeared to pronounce the location like 'pizza', and Bradley didn't accept the answer, saying: "No, Pisa". He later said: "Bad luck but I couldn't allow pizza, it has to be Pisa."

Some viewers at the time of the episode's broadcast were surprised that the answer wasn't accepted. According to the outlet, one of them described it as a "harsh" decision.
