Martin Lewis has revealed the three hours each day you should avoid using your washing machine.

The Money Saving Expert has urged Brits not to use their washing machines during certain times to try and avoid the chance of blackouts.

The advice comes amid warnings that energy supplies will be 'tighter than normal' following the cold snap that has blanketed Britain over the past week.

On Monday, more than a million families were paid to cut their electricity under an emergency scheme to prevent the nation's supply from being overstretched on one of the coldest days of the year.

Now, the finance guru has given households tips on when best to use their washing machine, as it is one of the most expensive to run and heavily used appliances in the home.

On ITV’s This Morning, Martin gave some useful tips and delivered what he called a “general energy security message” that should have “been said more by the government” to viewers.

Following the National Grid's warning that there could be power outages on “really, really cold” winter days, the Money Saving Expert founder has recommended the best time for families to use their washing machines.

He said: “We are looking at energy difficulties this winter. We hope there will not be any blackouts.

“But there are emergency scenarios where power cuts - short power cuts - in different regions are possible that have been put forward by National Grid.”

Following this, Martin has said that the peak time for energy usage was between 4pm to 7pm in the evening, which is when the National Grid warned blackouts could happen.

Britons should therefore avoid putting their washing machines or drying machines on during this time, whenever possible.

By doing this, he says that this will also help other families out.

Martin continued to say : “Let’s all try not to put stuff we don’t need to put on between 4pm and 7pm.

“If we can avoid using lots of energy between 4pm and 7pm and it makes no difference to our lives, then we should all be somewhat conscious of that, whether or not it’s cheaper, because it will collectively help us all."

Meanwhile yesterday, the Mirror Money team reported Martin Lewis's nifty hack on a cheaper alternative for drying clothes - and it costs just 7p an hour.

The expert has suggested that Britons should invest in a dehumidifier as the amount of kilowatt's per hour it uses is "generally far, far cheaper" than putting the heating on.
