Malaysia’s ex-PM Ismail Sabri charged over $40m wealth declaration failure
A Malaysian court charged former Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob on Thursday with failing to disclose his assets to the country’s anti-graft agency.
According to state news agency Bernama, the 66-year-old is accused of failing to declare local and foreign currencies totaling nearly $40 million, as well as five gold bars, to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) on February 7 last year at the agency’s headquarters.
Ismail Sabri, who served as Malaysia’s prime minister from August 2021 to October 2022, pleaded not guilty to the charges and was released on 300,000 ringgit (about $74,500) bail.
He submitted a wealth declaration to the MACC in March last year after the agency seized the $40 million in assets allegedly linked to him as part of a broader investigation into corruption and money laundering.
The next hearing in the trial is set for September 29.
