Keir Starmer steps down as UK prime minister
Sir Keir Starmer has resigned as Prime Minister after saying ’my work is done’ in his final speech.
The outgoing leader met the King at Buckingham Palace after a jovial farewell address outside Number 10.
Sir Keir listed his achievements in Number 10 and said his successor Andy Burnham has his ’full support’.
Buckingham Palace confirmed the King accepted Sir Keir’s resignation.
Burnham will now travel to Buckingham Palace around noon to become the Monarch’s fourth Prime Minister.
The former Greater Manchester Mayor will ride back to Downing Street to give his first address to the nation between 12:30 pm and 1:00 pm.
He will use the moment to say he is ’acutely conscious’ that he will be the UK’s sixth PM in 10 years and will call for more ’stable and responsible’ politics.
Burnham will then end weeks of frenzied speculation and appoint his top team of Cabinet members.
A wave of new policy announcements are also expected by the new government.
