Carol Vorderman has backed Andy Burnham for Prime Minister after Keir Starmer stepped down.

Speaking on Good Morning Britain moments before Keir’s speech outside Downing Street, she said: "He’s very, very popular across the North and much loved in Liverpool as well, which is where he’s from."

"I think this is a time of opportunity, and I think in terms of politics, there are times when you want to vote against someone, and Reform are now going down and down and down in the polls."

She added: "Last year, I went to the Labour Party conference. This was last September in Liverpool. We had four or five hundred people in the theatre inside the Labour Party conference - so everyone in the audience was Labour. And I said then, ’I am telling you now that Keir Starmer will never be voted in again as prime minister.’ And then I went on to talk about Andy Burnham, and what happened at the end of that talk? I got a standing ovation, and that was people inside the Labour Party conference."

Sir Keir Starmer has announced he will resign as Prime Minister less than two years after coming to power.

In a statement outside 10 Downing Street, Sir Keir said his party had asked “whether I am best placed to lead us into the next general election.” He said: “I have heard the answer of my parliamentary party to that question, and I accept that answer with good grace.”

Sir Keir’s emotional statement followed a weekend spent mulling his future with his family at Chequers, the Prime Minister’s country residence. While his decision remained unclear early on Monday, ministerial allies and Number 10 staff gathered in Downing Street shortly before 9:30 am in an indication Sir Keir was preparing to announce his resignation.

Sir Keir’s decision to stand down means Labour will now hold a contest to choose his successor, with Andy Burnham seen as the frontrunner. The former Greater Manchester mayor is expected to arrive in Westminster to be sworn in as an MP on Monday afternoon after winning the Makerfield by-election.

Former health secretary Wes Streeting is also expected to put himself forward as a candidate.

Andy Burnham won the byelection in Makerfield

Carol has been a key supporter of Burnham’s and demanded an apology from Reform UK candidate Robert Kenyon - who stood against Burnham in the recent Makerfield byelection - after ’disgusting comments’ he made about her on social media.

She told us: "I’m 65, I grew up in North Wales in abject poverty, I spent half of my life living in the North, whether it was Leeds, or Manchester, or that strip of North Wales. And he [Kruger] says Kenyon is just an ordinary man saying ordinary things. No, I’m sorry, Kenyon isn’t an ordinary man. He’s a cowardly man which is why he deleted one of his social media accounts."

"They are public comments on a public platform and if Danny Kruger thinks online abuse is OK then Reform are therefore stating online abuse against women is OK, then all women in Makerfield need to know that."
