David de Gea insists he has nothing to prove to anybody.

Manchester United ’s No.1 has faced questions over his Old Trafford future for several years but has bounced back to silence his detractors every time. His absence from Spain’s World Cup squad was seen by some as further confirmation that his powers are waning.

But, either side of the finals, he has been in good form for United as Erik ten Hag’s men have turned themselves into outside title candidates. De Gea’s performance against Crystal Palace on Wednesday, which included one brilliant save in particular, a fingertip stop to deny Odsonne Edouard, was another timely reminder that he’s a long way from being finished yet.

He said: “I don’t have to show anything, I have shown already for many years my qualities. I know people love to talk, but I’m used to that.

“I’m just performing as well as I can, helping the team and trying my best all the time. Experience makes it easier to block out the noise. I live a lot of things, I get through many, many difficult moments.

“I don’t care to be honest, I just focus on my games, on my training and on my team. I’m feeling great, I’m feeling really well. I’m helping the team, training well, feeling confident. Like the whole team, we’re playing well.”

Unsurprisingly, he was pleased as punch with the save that denied Edouard. He added: “It was a great save, to be honest. As soon as I saw the ball coming I doubted if I could make the save, but I touched the ball a bit. It was a great save, especially as we scored soon after, so I’m good, I’m feeling really good, let’s keep going.”

If United want to keep going in title terms then a win against Arsenal on Sunday is a must. Although the fact they will be without midfield general Casemiro through suspension is a major blow.

Asked how big a loss the Brazilian will be, De Gea said: “Massive. Massive. We have a massive miss for Sunday’s game, one of the best players of the team.

“All over the pitch he’s helping the team — defensively, attacking — he’s one of the best in the world in his position for sure. His experience is unbelievable and he’s great to have in the team. But we have more players who want to play and will show their qualities.”

For the first time in a while, an Arsenal-United clash will have an impact on the title race. And De Gea, who once made 14 saves in a game against the Gunners, added: “Both teams have always been massive clubs, great teams, always playing to win trophies.

“So it’s nice to play now when both teams are in a good shape and playing well. It’s going to be a massive game. We want to win and we will go to London to try to beat them.

“They always have quality players, they want to play from the back and fast players in front. I remember the game with 14 saves, that was a great game, especially because we won. Hopefully, I can make another big game. It could be a massive three points for us.”
