A 30-year-old doctor died after the car she was driving ended up in a river.

Dr Sara Ahmed worked at the Mayo University Hospital, Castlebar, Ireland and passed away in what is believed to have been a freak drowning accident.

Dr Ahmed was taken from the vehicle, which partially submerged, at Hoban's Carpark in Castlebar, adjacent to the Castlebar river, the Irish Mirror reports.

Authorities believe that Dr Ahmed had been reversing the car, which breached a safety barrier and ended up in the river.

The Castlebar River had been swollen at the time following heavy rainfall in recent days.
