Three people have died after a man suspected to be under the influence drove the wrong way down a road in the US, say police.

A man has been arrested after the incident in Springfield, Illinois, according to local broadcaster KYTV.

The TV station reported: "Springfield police say three people are dead after a male suspected to be under the influence was driving the wrong way traveling westbound in eastbound lanes on James River."

Multiple emergency responders are on the scene.

Footage from the crash site shows rescue crews working through the wreckage on the stretch of motorway.

KYTV reported that the pickup driver was in critical condition. Police believe the driver, a man in his 60s, may have been intoxicated.

Cops closed off motorway traffic to deal with the incident.

Earlier this month, a downtown business in Springfield was left to clean up the damage after a car ploughed into the front of its building for the second time this year.

That crash happened during a Monday morning rush hour when an SUV ran a red light and hit a car going the other way.

The SUV hit a glass panel on the Hearts of Fire Tattoo Shop before knocking over a fire hydrant outside.

In Northern California in January, two kids and two adults miraculously escaped death after plunging 250ft off a cliff in a Tesla.

The group were driving along a dangerous stretch of road known as the Devil's Slide known for fatal car accidents.

The Tesla car fell 250ft from the road before crashing onto a rocky outcrop just a few feet from the sea below.

As it fell the car seemed to have flipped a few times before landing on it wheels.

Rescuers have said the fact none of the passengers were killed was quite extraordinary.

“We go there all the time for cars over the cliff and they never live. This was an absolute miracle,” said Brian Pottenger, a battalion chief for Coastside Fire Protection District/Cal Fire.

At the end of last year, three teens tragically died after a car they were in crashed and overturned in the woods.

Police have described the incident as an "absolute tragedy" as they are now trying to determine the causes of the crash.

Witnesses reported seeing a car speeding before it overturned multiple times at 9:45pm on Wednesday on Long Island, New York.

Sixteen-year-old driver Cem Gunes was behind the wheel of his mother’s car and only had a learner’s permit, Suffolk County police have confirmed.

One of the passengers in the 2009 Infiniti G37 was ejected from the vehicle in the horror crash, which happened in Holtsville, a h amlet on Long Island, police added.

Authorities added that, tragically, Gunes and the two passengers, 17-year-old Taylor Beltramini of Moriches and 18-year-old Landon Kromhout Auditore of Mastic, were pronounced dead at the scene.

No one else was in the car.

Cops have gone on to say that it is unlikely Gunes and Beltramini were wearing seatbelts because they were tossed from the car.
